Global Power Solutions is a privately held consulting firm in the electric power industry concentrating in geothermal and gas-fired combined cycle power generation technologies. GPS specializes in performance engineering and management consulting activities, including developing test procedures, reviewing, observing, and evaluating power plant testing for owners and lenders, and recommending how plant performance can be improved. GPS also performs due diligence and optimization studies related to project economics, staffing, bidding strategies and acquisition support.
GPS has worked on projects that range in size from 10 MW to 1500 MW. Our clients include geothermal and gas fired combined cycle power plant developers, lenders (including both commercial lenders and the World Bank), and government researchers focused on advancing the state-of-the-art in geothermal plant performance from the perspectives of technical capabilities, efficiency, and economics.
The firms principals, Gary McKay and Robert Tucker, have extensive expertise in environmental permitting, operations, performance testing, geothermal resource management, and drilling. Our headquarters are in Colorado and we have worked on power projects in New Zealand, Kenya, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Argentina, Papua New Guinea, Germany, and the United States.
GARY D. MCKAY, BSME, P.E, MBA (Finance)
Mr. McKay has two decades in the Power Industry supporting numerous clients in the areas of plant performance, thermal sciences, engineering economics and finance. His experience includes performance analysis, economic evaluation, equipment selection, and performance testing - from initial feasibility studies to detailed engineering and operations support. Mr. McKay has developed extensive analytical and computer skills in support of this expertise.
Mr. McKay has extensive experience in geothermal power, including performance optimizations for the design of SMUDGEO#1, Oxy Geothermal No.1 and CCPA #1, together with performance assessment and enhancement work for a number of other units world-wide, and other domestic and international geothermal fields.
Prior to his work as a consultant, Mr. McKay was employed by Stone & Webster Engineering Corporation as a key member of the Heat Balance and Special Studies Group and earned an MBA in Finance. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Colorado.
ROBERT E. TUCKER, BSME, MSME
Robert Tucker has nearly 30 years of geothermal industry experience with increasing responsibilities from Project Manager for Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation to executive positions within WESTEC Services, Geothermal Resources International, Caithness Energy, and more recently Co-Founder and Senior Executive Vice President of GeoGlobal Energy.
To compliment his management expertise, Mr. Tucker has served as the Geothermal Resources council General Chairman in 1988 and the Key Note Speaker at the 1999 Annual Meeting. As a gifted educator, Mr. Tucker has also been an adjunct professor for the graduate-level capstone course in the Masters of Science in Engineering and Technology Management Program at the Colorado School of Mines.
Mr. Tucker has been involved in more than half of the world?s geothermal MWs, including reservoir assessment, engineering, design, construction, startup, operator training, operations and maintenance and project rehabilitation and expansion.
KENNETH A. PHAIR, PE, MSME
Mr. Phair has worked in the geothermal power industry for more than 31 years. Mr. Phair has contributed to the design or upgrade studies for power plants that represent nearly 40% of the world's installed geothermal generation capacity.
As Project Manager, Project Engineer, or Lead Mechanical Engineer on projects for Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation and Power Engineers, Mr. Phair has provided technical direction of engineering and design activities on a wide variety of geothermal projects. He has also participated in construction, startup, and commissioning, and performance testing of geothermal power plants.
Mr. Phair engineered the mechanical systems for SMUDGEO #1 and Darajat Stage II, two of the world's most efficient geothermal power plants.
Mr. Phair authored the Geothermal Power section for the tenth and eleventh editions of Marks' Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan and California.
